Spring Break on the Back 40

March 10-13, 2009
10 a.m.-2 p.m.

Each year, UTSA's Institute of Texan Cultures offers its visitors a frontier-style Spring Break! The Back 40 will be open Tuesday through Friday during Spring Break for families to learn how the earliest settlers in Texas spent their "spring breaks." Activities and games will include writing on slate boards in the schoolhouse, hopscotch, jumping rope, hoop rolling, doll making, and cow roping. Kids can even enlist in an honorary Buffalo Soldier regiment! Activity locations:

Tuesday
Dog-trot Log House—Create a braided doll and wash clothes in the washtub. Learn about pioneer gardening and plant a seed to begin your own spring garden.

Wednesday
The Barn—Try your hand at roping just like the cowboys. Make a pioneer toy to take home with you.

Thursday
Adobe House—Learn about a West Texas garden and make a traditional festive paper flower. Plant a seed to begin your own spring garden.

Friday
The Fort—March in formation. Learn about how soldiers used mapping and create an area map of your own. Learn about flag ceremonies.

The one-room schoolhouse will be open each day for you to write your lessons on a slate board and then play schoolyard games.
