Seven-String Barbed Wire Fence: Many Faces of Latino Immigration in the United States

The issue of immigration in the United States has ignited passionate debate, particularly in states that share a border with Mexico. This exhibit gives immigration a human face, documenting events that have garnered national attention and profiling the lives of Latino migrants in the United States through the eyes of New Mexico photojournalist Diana Molina.

Seven-String Barbed Wire Fence: Many Faces of Latino Immigration in the United States is a photo-intensive multimedia documentation of Latino immigration in America presented in an interpretive traveling exhibit that chronicles immigration from varied viewpoints. The exhibit features a photographic collection, montages, three-dimensional installations, a video installation and text to provide a comprehensive portrayal of the actors and arguments within the post-9/11 debate over immigration policy reform.

Seven strings of barbed wire fence divide the United States and Mexico along various sections of the 2,000-mile border; along other stretches there are more formidable barriers, while in other border regions, the boundary is even less defined.

The body of work chronicles three recent national politically opposed events-The Immigrant Workers Freedom Rides, the ongoing Minuteman Patrols and the Anti-HR4437 Demonstrations-and provides a profile of the Latino immigrant, with an emphasis placed on undocumented workers and the U.S.-Mexico border they cross, the policy debate's most controversial topics.

Indeed, the annual entry of approximately 500,000 unauthorized Latino immigrants and the estimated 12 million that currently reside in the United States has made immigration one of the most hotly debated and important topics in the post-9/11 era. As the unauthorized-migrant population continues to spread nationwide, so does the need for political, cultural and historical understanding of immigration and the varied policy reform options legislators may consider. The United States' response to this issue will likely determine the paths of many countries worldwide, which are also locked in debate over immigration policy.

Seven-String Barbed Wire Fence: Many Faces of Latino Immigration in the United States is a timely and relevant exhibit designed to open the mind to the complexities of a most important issue. It will be featured at UTSA's Institute of Texan Cultures through January 14, 2007.
